What hackers want: motivations and goals
In the digital age, online security concerns everyone. Hackers, also known as cybercriminals, are a constant threat to the integrity of our systems and data. But what are these attackers after? What drives them, and what are their goals?
Financial gain
One of the main motivations for hackers is money. They seek access to confidential information—credit card numbers, passwords, personal data—to profit illegally. Phishing attacks, identity theft, and extortion are just some of the ways hackers exploit sensitive information.
Curiosity and the challenge
Some hackers are motivated by curiosity and the challenge of breaching secure systems and networks. Ethical hackers (also known as white hat hackers) look for vulnerabilities and weaknesses to report to owners and help improve security. Malicious actors may also be motivated by the challenge of bypassing protections and reaching confidential information.
Revenge and activism
In some cases hackers seek revenge against a company or organisation they believe has acted unjustly. They may launch denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to damage reputation or disrupt operations. Others are driven by political or social activism, aiming to draw attention to a cause or issue.
Fame and recognition
Some hackers seek fame and standing in the cyber community. They may launch high-profile attacks or compromise visible systems to demonstrate skill and gain status.
How to protect yourself from hackers
We cannot eliminate the risk of attacks entirely, but we can take steps to reduce it:
- Use strong, unique passwords for every account.
- Keep systems and software updated with the latest security patches.
- Use antivirus and a firewall to protect your device and network.
- Avoid opening suspicious emails or downloading files from unknown sources.
- Use a VPN (virtual private network) to encrypt your data online.
